The main types of institutions, which carry out the major research and development activities in Latvia, are the state research institutes and organizations, the state and private higher educational establishments, university research institutes (agencies of universities) and research units in the business enterprise sector.
Most of the state research institutions are supervised by the Ministry of Education and Science, but some - by the Ministry of Agriculture or Ministry of Economics. There are various other organizations with inde- pendent legal status whose primary function isn’t research, but which are closely connected with the research or performs research in some extent, e.g. the National Botanical Garden, the Latvian Academic Library, breeding and selection stations, engineering centres.
